| Subject: | Life-Saving Adrenal Insufficiency Medication in Schools |
| Some children have medical conditions that are potentially life-threatening if not treated quickly. This is the case with adrenal insufficiency disorder, which occurs when the adrenal glands do not produce enough adrenal hormones. In some instances, this disorder can lead to adrenal crisis, which happens without warning and offers very little time to react. In such instances, failure to administer medication almost immediately is life-threatening. Although adults with this disorder often carry their medication with them, school children cannot, which demonstrates the need for the responsible administration of such medications in a school setting. With these concerns in mind, I am joining with Senator John Blake to work together to address this issue by introducing a House version of his Senate legislation. We share the belief that it is of the highest importance to protect children who have adrenal insufficiency disorder, and could possibly experience an adrenal crisis while in school. This legislation would require schools to develop a written policy for the appropriate storage, possession, and self-administration of adrenal insufficiency medications in cases of adrenal crisis, just as current law requires such policies for asthma inhalers and epinephrine auto-injectors (EpiPens). The Departments of Health and Education would provide technical assistance and resources to schools and publicly-accessible information regarding the administration of such medication. This bill would also allow a school to authorize a trained employee(s) to administer such medication. Please support this important life-saving initiative which seeks to protect the lives of vulnerable children. |
