MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 7, 2020 02:43 PM
From: Representative R. Lee James
To: All House members
Subject: CPR Instructions for Students (Former HB 278)

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation to require school entities to offer CPR instructions to students.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a valuable lifesaving technique used in emergency situations to assist an individual who has suffered a cardiac arrest. Currently, the Public School Code requires school entities to offer a CPR training class at least once every three years as an option to all school employees. At this time, the statute does not require that this training be extended to students.

My legislation will simply require that school entities also offer this training as an option to all students enrolled in the school entity in grades nine through twelve. In this way, my bill will ensure that our high school students have access to this lifesaving training, while minimizing any additional burden placed on our public schools by allowing them to utilize the existing models already being implemented for their employees.

I hope you will join me in sponsoring this legislation.
