MEMORANDUM

Subject: Prohibiting Tenant Evictions During a Declaration of Disaster Emergency

Vulnerable workers and their families need our protection. When the Commonwealth is under a declaration of disaster emergency, the last thing workers should face is losing their home and the protection it affords their family. When crisis strikes and there are no alternatives, they should know their home is protected.

Thus, my legislation will provide an exemption from eviction for workers who are unemployed, separated from employment or unable to look for employment during a declaration of disaster emergency. Landlords in violation will face penalties.

Prohibiting landlords from evicting tenants during a disaster emergency not only protects susceptible workers, but it also protects their families which could include seniors or disabled family members. Looking out for those most distressed in a time of emergency is critical to the wellbeing of Pennsylvania.

No one should worry about eviction during the unprecedented challenges faced during a state of disaster emergency. I ask you to join me in standing up for the tenants of this Commonwealth.
