Subject: | Same Day Voter Registration |
Twenty one states and the District of Columbia now have same day voter registration programs. These states typically have higher turnout rates, and in some election years, their turnout is more than 10 percent higher than those states without same day voter registration. Accordingly, I will re-introduce HB 745 of 2019 that will allow for same day voter registration on Election Day. Voters will have the opportunity to register at their polling place on Election Day by providing a form(s) of identification that includes a photo, name, and permanent address. Examples include a valid driver’s license or government ID card. Expired forms of ID can also be provided along with a current proof of address. Critics of same day registration often claim that this will open the door to increased voter fraud. However, in the years since these states have instituted same day voter registration, there has not been one documented incident of voter fraud as a result of same day voter registration. To ensure a vibrant democracy, we need as close to full participation as possible. This measure will undoubtedly increase voter turnout, and increase the number who have a say in our society. Increased voter participation benefits us all. I invite you to join as a co-sponsor of this legislation. Thank you. |
