| There are currently 14 state-sanctioned, privately-run, and publicly-funded cyber schools in Pennsylvania. Given that cyber charter schools cannot limit admission on the basis of things such as intellectual ability, English proficiency, disability, and more, cyber education continues to be a growing avenue for families and supporters of school choice. However, that also makes cyber charter schools liable to the same judgments as brick-and-mortar charter schools and traditional public schools. Recently, Pennsylvania Auditor General Eugene DePasquale called for an increased transparency for charter schools. He believes that taxpayers deserve to know exactly where their tax money is going. I want to apply the Auditor General’s call for transparency to cyber charter schools, as well. My legislation, titled the Property Tax Protection Act, would make cyber charter management companies subject to audit by the Auditor General. This would hold cyber charter schools accountable and at the same standards we expect of our public schools. Please join me in co-sponsoring legislation that would continue to provide the transparency that all Pennsylvanians deserve. |
