MEMORANDUM

From: Representative Stephen Kinsey and Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, Rep. Jordan A. Harris
To: All House members
Subject: Honoring the Life and Legacy of Congressman John Lewis

It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of Congressman John Lewis – an American civil rights icon and a moral visionary – who passed away on July 17, 2020. Congressman Lewis was an integral part of the civil rights movement and a leading voice in the advancement of economic and social justice. He became a well-known civil rights leader in the 1960s when leading the march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, a landmark event in the civil rights movement known as “Bloody Sunday.”

Having served in Congress for more than 33 years, Congressman Lewis was a lifelong champion of equality and voting rights. During his time as a United States Representative, he pushed for the creation of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture and helped create the FBI’s Cold Case Initiative, which reopens cases of racially motivated murders from past decades. His life was devoted to activism and advocacy for equal justice in America, and his actions have inspired so many today.

For these reasons, we will be introducing a resolution honoring Congressman Lewis’ life and acknowledging his dedication to protecting human rights and civil liberties for every single person in America.

We ask that you please join us in honoring the life and legacy of Congressman John Lewis.
