Subject: | Ban Smoking in Casinos During COVID-19 |
Recently, it has come to my attention that some casinos are allowing smoking inside their establishments, even though we are still in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. The smoke a person breathes may carry COVID-19 and expose others in close proximity to this deadly virus. In addition, smoking and secondhand smoke damages the lungs and puts people at an increased risk of respiratory illnesses, such as COVID-19. As our counties move to the green phase, people will begin traveling across the state to gamble in our casinos – but they should not have to gamble with their lives. Under current law, these casino patrons will be allowed to smoke and possibly expose others to COVID-19 via secondhand smoke. This could lead to a second spike in COVID-19 that would further devastate our communities. We must act now in the interest of public health to mitigate any potential rebounds in this disease. I ask you to join me in such mitigation efforts by supporting this legislation. |
