Subject: Extension for Filing State Income Tax Returns and Payments due to COVID-19

The American Institute of CPAs has urged the US Treasury Department and the IRS to provide relief to all taxpayers due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. With the Governor’s suggestion that all non-essential businesses in Pennsylvania should close to prevent the spread of COVID-19, it is our moral obligation to provide for our citizens that find themselves out of jobs and with limited access to income.

As healthcare experts work to contain and combat the spread of the virus, we legislators must work to provide relief for workers and their families. And as we see with this COVID-19 outbreak, many volunteer tax preparation events have been canceled and professional tax offices are encouraged to work remotely, making it harder for many Pennsylvanians to file by the normal deadline. My legislation will provide an automatic 60-day extension to the deadline for Pennsylvanians to file their state income tax returns and payments when a disaster emergency has been declared.

As lawmakers, we need to be doing everything we can to mitigate the negative effects of COVID-19 in our Commonwealth. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation to help to our fellow Pennsylvanians during these challenging times.
