Subject: | Clarifying the existing 180 School-Day Law |
In response to the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on school closings in the Commonwealth, I will be introducing legislation to clarify existing law. Currently, the PA Secretary of Education may issue a weather, safety, and/or health related emergency declaration to alter the 180 days of mandated school instruction each year to a requirement based on hours of instruction. However, as school superintendents weigh school closings for their individual districts and the lengths of closures remains unknown, we need to change the law for these extenuating circumstances and allow each school district to individually request a waiver from the mandated 180 days and the hours requirement. Each requested waiver must be approved by the secretary under an expedited timeline. This new process will allow individual districts to make the best decisions for their community, while also allowing the Department of Education to evaluate each request based on a variety of factors. Please join me in co-sponsoring this bill. |
