Subject: | Waiving Driver’s License/Identification Fees for Homeless and Foster Youth |
For those experiencing homelessness, proper identification is necessary to get a job or receive government services. However, financial barriers to obtaining such identification cause many to go without critical services. This is worsened for unaccompanied homeless youth and foster youth who are also required to have parental consent when applying for identification. Next week, as part of a five-bill package, I will introduce legislation to combat this issue. The first bill waives fees, residency requirements, and parental consent requirements for foster youth and homeless youth applying for a driver’s license or an identification card. Easing restrictions on this vulnerable population to obtain identification required to provide mobility and access services will help empower them to attend school, obtain jobs and become productive members of our society. Thank you for your consideration to co-sponsor legislation to help homeless and foster youth. |
