Subject: | Resolution Designating January 2020 as “Cervical Cancer Awareness Month” |
Cervical cancer, an unfortunate result of the human papillomavirus (HPV), claims the lives of about 4,000 mothers, wives, and daughters annually. However, access to early detection and appropriate treatment can drastically improve a woman’s prognosis. With regular and timely screening and comprehensive vaccination efforts, cervical cancer is highly preventable and treatable. Even with the availability of safe and effective HPV vaccines, missed vaccination opportunities remain high in Pennsylvania, and in the United States overall, and approximately half of all cervical cancer cases are in women who have never been screened. Increasing the awareness around cervical cancer can empower young women and girls to act as informed stewards of their own reproductive health and can aid our communities in combatting cervical cancer and the pain it has inflicted on families for years. For this reason, I will introduce a resolution to designate January 2020 as “Cervical Cancer Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. Please join me in spreading awareness of cervical cancer to improve health outcomes and save lives in Pennsylvania. |
