Subject: Ensuring High Quality Education for Deaf Students

Every child deserves a high-quality education—with no exceptions. Unfortunately, deaf, hard of hearing, and deaf-blind students often don’t receive the support they need from our educational system to achieve their full potential. To ensure deaf students are in a school environment that fulfills their unique needs, I am introducing a two-bill package based on recently passed New Jersey legislation.

The first piece of legislation is a Deaf Student’s Bill of Rights that would require schools provide deaf students with key supports to guarantee they have the same access to high-quality education as students who are not deaf, hard of hearing or, deaf-blind.

The second would establish a commission on deaf education that would produce a parent resource guide, identify potential improvements to early intervention programs for deaf children, and develop methods to collect data on the progress of deaf and hard of hearing children from birth to age five.

This legislature must ensure that our classrooms are meeting the needs of all students—including those who are deaf and hard of hearing. Please help make this a reality by co-sponsoring both of the bills I am introducing.
