|Subject:||Expanding and extending the Fire Company and EMS Grant programs|
|Recruitment and retention are the biggest challenges facing firefighting and EMS agencies, as we learned last year when the SR 6 Commission issued its report on the delivery of fire and emergency medical services across Pennsylvania. The report identified the successful Fire Company and EMS Grant programs as an ideal opportunity to provide resources for these agencies to recruit and retain our valuable first responders.
I am proposing the expansion of the eligible uses of the Fire Company and EMS Grant programs’ awards to include recruitment and retention. This money could be put toward efforts such as a volunteer firefighter length of service award and programs to attract junior firefighters to the volunteer ranks. In addition, the Grant programs’ authority is set to expire next summer, and it is imperative that we extend this model initiative for another four years.
Please join me in co-sponsoring these changes recommended by the SR 6 Commission so that we can ensure our fire and EMS agencies can continue to respond when disaster strikes.
