Subject: | Sikhism Celebration - "World Equality Day" November 12, 2019 |
In the very near future, we will be introducing a resolution recognizing November 12, 2019, the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, as “World Equality Day.” Sikhism is the world’s fifth largest religion with nearly 30 million followers, including roughly one million in the United States. A holistic understanding of peace, supported by ideas of equality and fraternity is part of the Sikh tradition. This year, Sikhs across the globe celebrate the 550th birthday of the founder of the Sikh faith, Guru Nanak (1469-1539), who was an original spiritual thinker and expressed his thoughts through poetry that forms the basis of Sikh scripture. His social teachings denounced the caste system and taught that everyone is equal, regardless of caste, creed or gender. Please join us in recognizing “World Equality Day” on November 12, 2019. |
