| Subject: | Recognizing September 2019 as Benzodiazepine Addiction Recovery Month |
| Benzodiazepines, commonly known as “benzos,” are a highly addictive class of prescription medications used as sedatives and muscle relaxants, which include well-known brands such as Xanax and Valium. A benzodiazepine addiction can be developed within a few weeks of use. Due to increased usage, it is vital that Pennsylvanians be aware of the signs and symptoms of benzodiazepine addiction. Once addicted, an individual can demonstrate many physical, personal, and psychological symptoms including slurred speech, drowsiness, rage, mania, reclusive behavior, and loss of personal relationships. Unfortunately, there is no quick fix for beating addiction, and treatment can be very lengthy as gradual reduction is the most effective method in ending benzodiazepine dependency. As stewards of public health and safety, we must encourage every person to learn more about benzodiazepine abuse in order to be informed of its side effects and treatment. As such, I plan to introduce a resolution that will designate the month of September 2019 as “Benzodiazepine Addiction Recovery Month.” Your consideration is greatly appreciated. |
