Subject: | Designating August 1-7, 2019, as “World Breastfeeding Week” |
Breastfeeding is one of the best investments in saving lives and improving the health and economic development of individuals and nations. Children who are breastfed have a lower risk of acquiring diseases, such as childhood leukemia, sudden infant death syndrome and type 2 diabetes, as well as lowering the mother’s risk of acquiring certain types of breast cancer and type 2 diabetes. The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action seeks to protect and support breastfeeding across the world and annually recognizes “World Breastfeeding Week” as a means of highlighting the critical importance of breastfeeding children. Although many countries are experiencing significant increases in the number of breastfed children within the last decade, Pennsylvania has not yet met the national breastfeeding goals set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In an effort to address this issue and to support the overall goals of the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, I plan to introduce a resolution to designate the week of August 1-7, 2019, as “World Breastfeeding Week” in Pennsylvania. Please join me in supporting this important resolution. |
