MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 13, 2019 10:50 AM
From: Representative Jake Wheatley, Jr.
To: All House members
Subject: Teacher Tax Credit

Did you know that more than half of all Pennsylvanian teachers do not receive reimbursements or discretionary funding from their districts for classroom supplies? On average, a Pennsylvanian teacher will spend $450 of their own money to buy vital classroom supplies for their students each year.

Not only is this a cost some teachers choose to bear, but it further drives the striking inequities students face across school districts in Pennsylvania. We entrust in teachers the critical task of shaping our next generation of scientists, entrepreneurs, writers, and artists. Yet, teachers in underfunded schools take on the burden of buying books, pencils, markers, notebooks, binders, computers, chairs, and so much more so that their students may experience learning opportunities that they would otherwise never have a chance to experience.

My bill hopes to alleviate some the of financial burden teachers carry:
  • Creates a teacher tax credit of $250 per year that a Pennsylvanian teacher may claim for classroom supplies that they paid for out-of-pocket and is not reimbursed by their school.
  • Classroom expenses and supplies include books, supplies, computers and related equipment, including related software and services, other equipment, and any other supplementary materials used in the classroom and not reimbursed.
Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation.
