| Subject: | RESOLUTION - Gold Star Family Tax Relief Act - S. 1370 |
| I plan to introduce a resolution urging the President of the United States and the U. S. Congress to enact the Gold Star Family Tax Relief Act of 2019. Gold star families have already endured incredible sacrifice in the name of our national defense; therefore, it is incumbent upon all of us to do all we can to respect both the legacies of those service members lost in the line of duty and the grief that gold star families face. The Tax Cut and Jobs Act of 2017 designated the Survivor Benefit Plan compensation that gold star families receive to be subject to taxation at the estate and trust rate or at their parent’s rate; thereby, substantially increasing their tax burden. This designation was an unintended consequence of the law. Members of Congress have since realized this oversight and have sought to rectify the situation through the introduction and subsequent passage of S. 1370, which is now awaiting action in the U.S. House of Representatives. The enactment of S.1370 will ensure that our nation fulfills its duty to our gold star families and the legacies left by service members lost in the line of duty. Please join me in sponsoring this very timely and important resolution recognizing and honoring the dedication and sacrifice of America’s gold star families. |
