MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 15, 2019 11:27 AM
From: Representative Anthony M. DeLuca
To: All House members
Subject: Filling School Board Vacancies

Local school boards in Pennsylvania make important decisions that have lasting effects on the education of our students. From budgets to academic offerings, the votes taken by school board directors are crucial. As a result, I believe school board directors should be held to a higher standard. To that end, I plan to introduce legislation which would amend the Public School Code to prohibit a school board from filling a vacancy with the spouse of a current member. Vacancies occur for a variety of reasons, and the current board is typically charged with appointing someone to serve for the remainder of the term. Qualified, independent candidates should be considered, and nepotism should not be tolerated. Please join me in supporting this commonsense legislation.

Introduced as HB1659
