MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 3, 2019 02:46 PM
From: Representative Thomas P. Murt
To: All House members
Subject: Establishing the Office of Veterans Mental Health Awareness (Prior HB 707)

In the near future, I plan to reintroduce legislation that will amend Title 51 (Military Affairs) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes, providing for the delivery of services and programs to veterans with cognitive mental disabilities and emotional trauma; and establishing the Office of Veterans Mental Health Awareness.

Specifically, my proposal will do the following:
  • Provide full access to a range of support services and programs.
  • Provide equal access to all support services and awareness programs.
  • Provide information to veterans and health care providers regarding mental disabilities, mental illness, sexual and personal trauma.
  • Provide a list of available health care providers.
  • Assist in maintaining employment and support services for people in their homes and communities.

I am proposing this legislation on behalf of all veterans who face a mental health issue, so that they can receive the necessary services that will promote independent living and strong family sustainability. Veterans need assistance in obtaining or maintaining employment, financial stability, and health care services. This legislation focuses on providing the necessary services that address the many issues our veterans face today. In a time where more and more veterans face severe mental issues, it is of utmost importance to improve their quality of life the best way possible.

Please join me in cosponsoring this much needed and timely legislation.
