MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 1, 2019 03:49 PM
From: Representative Bud Cook
To: All House members
Subject: Opening Day of the Rifle Deer Season

In the near future, I intend to introduce legislation to amend Title 34 with regard to the opening day of the rifle deer season.

As you may know, the PA Game Commission (PGC) recently approved a regulation changing the opening day of the rifle deer season from the Monday after Thanksgiving to the Saturday immediately following Thanksgiving. The move was made in apparent disregard for an overwhelming amount of public comment received by the commission that was in opposition to the change. Some reports have placed this opposition at between 65 and 81 percent.

I and many of my constituents, as well as numerous sportsmen’s organizations, oppose this action by the PGC, especially considering the vast amount of opposition from the hunting community. This action to move the starting day to Saturday without the proper consideration of the hunting community as a whole will likely have a negative effect on Thanksgiving family time, travel time to hunting camps, and preparations for opening day.

My legislation will require that the starting day for the rifle deer season be the traditional Monday after Thanksgiving, as it has been since for over five decades. By placing this requirement in statute, it will no longer be able to be changed without proper vetting, against the wishes of the vast majority of hunters.

I hope that you will join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.
