MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 6, 2019 12:00 PM
From: Representative Ryan A. Bizzarro
To: All House members
Subject: Parental Alienation and Hostile Aggressive Parenting Awareness Week

In Pennsylvania, unhealthy parenting styles are often overlooked. Parental alienation (PA) is the process and result of the psychological manipulation of a child into showing unwarranted fear, disrespect or hostility toward a targeted parent or other family member. This can be traumatic for both the child and the targeted parent. More often than not, children who suffer through these parenting styles develop low self-esteem, lack trust in others, and are more likely to experience depression and addiction.

My legislation will designate the week of June 3 through 9, 2019, as “Parental Alienation and Hostile Aggressive Parenting Awareness Week” in Pennsylvania. This is a Commonwealth-wide effort to raise awareness and highlight the adverse effects that PA and hostile aggressive parenting have on children and parents.

With the health and safety of Pennsylvania families in mind, it is imperative that we take the initiative to bring awareness to this issue. It is an important step toward ending the abuse of innocent children caught in the crossfire of spousal conflict. Judges, lawyers, police officers, doctors, policymakers, and the general public need the knowledge and tools to properly address this salient issue.

Your consideration is greatly appreciated.
