Subject: | LGBT Civil Rights Protection |
Today a Pennsylvanian can get married on Saturday and be fired on Monday for putting up a wedding picture. State law does not ban discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression. That means many of our neighbors, friends and family who are lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender can lose their homes, be denied jobs or be turned away from restaurants simply because of who they are and who they love. The legislature’s first action in the new legislative session should be to right these wrongs and support this proposal to update our law and better protect the people of this state. In prior years, this legislation has not received a vote despite overwhelming bipartisan support. As a result of this inaction, local governments across Pennsylvania passed ordinances to ensure these protections. It is time we take similar action to ensure equal protection of our LGBT family members and neighbors in every city, town, and borough across the Commonwealth. It is our duty to lead and do everything in our power to protect all of our constituents. Please join me in this fight to expand human rights and to alert leadership in both the House and Senate that this legislation is long overdue: It’s time to acknowledge the rights of all community members. |
