MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 8, 2019 02:44 PM
From: Representative Dawn W. Keefer
To: All House members
Subject: Optional Local Senior Property Tax Freeze

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation which would build on the existing Real Estate Tax Deferment Program Act in Title 53. This legislation will provide for an optional senior freeze program to permit local governments to freeze an eligible claimant’s property taxes at their base year amount for as long as the claimant remains eligible. The eligibility requirements for this program include:
  • Senior Citizens 65 years of age or older;
  • Earn a household income of less than $80,000 annually; and,
  • Have established residency within the Commonwealth for more than five years.
For our seniors relying on a fixed or limited income, this program will provide a much-needed degree of financial certainty that will ensure they may remain in their homes. I respectfully ask you to join me and co-sponsor this legislation.
