MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 8, 2019 10:25 AM
From: Representative Matt Gabler
To: All House members
Subject: Title 75 - Yellow Lights - prior HB419

In the near future, I will re-introduce legislation to authorize the use of revolving and flashing yellow lights for school vehicles, which are vehicles smaller than school buses that transport school students, such as vans and mini-vans. This bill was previously introduced as House Bill 419 of the 2017-18 session.

Under current law, school vehicles are not considered authorized vehicles for the purposes of visual signals such as revolving and flashing yellow lights. However, for the safety of students and others, I believe it is vital for school vehicles to be able to utilize these important visual signals. Though school vehicles currently use signage, allowing yellow lights for these vehicles will further promote safety.

Additionally, at times of inclement weather or during dawn or dusk, especially in rural areas of the Commonwealth, school vehicles are easily overlooked by motorists. Therefore, yellow lights will serve as additional visual signals for motorists to avoid accidents, and protect students

Please join me in sponsoring this important piece of legislation in order to promote public safety throughout the Commonwealth.

Thank you for your consideration.
