MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 4, 2019 09:31 AM
From: Representative Clint Owlett
To: All House members
Subject: Legislation Amending the Purely Public Charities Act – Former HB 2094

In the near future, I intend to re-introduce legislation (Former HB 2094) amending Section 5 of the Institutions of Purely Public Charities Act.

This bill will extend the act to include fraternal organizations operating under the lodge, council, or grange system that qualify for exemption from taxation under specific 501(c) sections of the Internal Revenue code and have been operating in this Commonwealth for at least 100 years.

These organizations are historically charitable, dedicating themselves to the betterment of their communities through service, education, and fellowship. Currently, there are a number of grange locations that have applied for and are given charitable status, removing them from certain tax liability. More specific references to grange locations are being added to provide more clarity and remove errors of interpretation for individual applications for exemptions from taxation.

I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation.
