Subject: | GPS Device for Stalkers (Prior HB 841) |
In the near future, I plan to reintroduce legislation to provide that any person who is placed on probation, or released on parole after a conviction for stalking, may be required as a condition of probation or parole to wear a global positioning system (GPS) device. In appropriate cases, the order for probation or parole would establish defined geographic exclusion zones in order to minimize the offender’s contact with the victim and other potential victims. If the offender enters an excluded zone, the offender’s location data will be immediately transmitted to the police department in the municipality where the violation occurred and to the probation or parole officer. This bill will enable the courts and law enforcement to work together to ensure that victims of stalking are protected even when their stalker is released from custody. This legislation is patterned after a Massachusetts law, and is similar to legislation recently introduced in New Jersey. Previous Cosponsors: BAKER, V. BROWN, D.
