Subject: | Establishing Early Voting in Pennsylvania |
The 2018 midterm general election set a new record in voter turnout in our country. However, only half of eligible voters in Pennsylvania cast a ballot. Simply put – many Pennsylvanians are missing their opportunity to vote and we need to make voting easier and more accessible. Of the 25 states that surpassed ours in terms of voter turnout, all but four offer some form of early voting. In fact, the states with early voting experienced record levels of voters casting an early ballot as reports two weeks prior to Election Day showed that over five million people had already voted. I believe that Pennsylvanians would greatly benefit from this expanded access to the ballot. As such, I will soon introduce legislation providing for an early voting period as well as no-excuse absentee voting. This proposal would increase voter turnout, create a more fully inclusive democracy, and benefit policy and society. I ask that you join me in co-sponsoring this legislation as it is our responsibility to make every effort to give all voting-eligible Pennsylvanians the opportunity to participate in our elections. Thank you for your consideration. |
