Subject: | Fair Work Week |
It is long past time that we put the wellbeing of Pennsylvania’s people above corporate profits. Workers in the retail, fast food industries, and hospitality are subjected to unpredictable and unreasonable work schedules. These schedules are produced by a computer program or corporate structures, that don’t take into account a person’s life outside of work. People who speak out to make their needs known often face retaliation, with real material consequence. The people of Pennsylvania deserve better. We deserve a predictable schedule so that we can schedule doctors' visits for ourselves and our families, attend college classes, arrange for childcare, and otherwise see to our needs as human beings. I am asking my colleagues to follow the lead set by the City Council of Philadelphia and pass a Fair Work Week bill. My bill will require employers to set clear workweek rules, so employees can know when and how much they will work. In addition, my bill will guarantee “predictability pay,” which pays workers when their shift is canceled or drastically changed. By establishing predictability, we can help families, strengthen our communities, and forge a real path out of poverty. Please join me as I stand with the working people of Pennsylvania and co-sponsor my legislation. |
