MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 5, 2018 05:07 PM
From: Representative Daniel J. Deasy
To: All House members
Subject: Massage Therapy Law

I hope you will support my legislation that would exempt a newly licensed massage therapist from the continuing education requirement for the first biennial renewal period.

Because all massage therapy licenses are renewed at the same time, individuals who apply for their license could have as little as several months to obtain the required continuing education credits. There is no exemption in statute so these people rely on the board granting a waiver each biennial renewal period. However, if the board would choose to not grant a waiver, that licensee would need the continuing education credits in order to renew. The licensees that have contacted our office find this stressful and view it as a risk. Some choose to cram all of the credits in that short period of time, which is hectic and costly. They do this so they don’t have to worry about the board’s decision. This language would alleviate this problem and is similar to what other boards have done.

I would appreciate you joining me in co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation. Thank you for your consideration.
