Subject: | Resolution recognizing November 15, 2018, as “The Great American Smokeout Day” in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing November 15, 2018, as “The Great American Smokeout Day” in Pennsylvania. In the United States, tobacco is the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death and cigarette smoking is believed to cause approximately one in five deaths every year. Smoking-related illness in the United States costs $170 billion per year in direct medical care for adults and $156 billion per year in lost productivity. The Great American Smokeout is an event designed to encourage smokers to quit smoking as well as to inform them of the various resources that they can use to quit. By recognizing the Great American Smokeout, the Commonwealth can bring awareness to the dangers of smoking, encourage smokers to quit, and provide resources to aid smokers in quitting. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution to help eliminate tobacco use in Pennsylvania. |
