MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 28, 2018 02:17 PM
From: Representative Mary Jo Daley
To: All House members
Subject: School District Closings for Election Day

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation requiring a public school district to be closed on Election Day if a general, municipal, special, or primary election occurs within the boundaries of the school district.

As you may know, current law provides for the use of public school buildings as polling places on Election Day. This presents a safety concern for school administrators who are tasked with having to coordinate the need for public access while simultaneously ensuing students’ safety. My legislation eliminates those safety and scheduling concerns and presents a unique advantage to students. Specifically, closing public schools gives students an opportunity to engage in the voting process via volunteerism as poll workers.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislative initiative which will ultimately improve the safety of our students, promote civic participation, and ease the logistical burden on school boards and polling place coordinators. Your support and consideration are most appreciated.
