Subject: | Cement Legislation |
The renewed public focus on rebuilding our nation’s infrastructure and on domestic manufacturing has been a welcome development. To that end, I am asking you to join me as a cosponsor of legislation to ensure that public funds are used to purchase cement and concrete for public construction projects from American sources. News reports in recent years have described foreign governments providing subsidies to their nations’ cement manufacturers. This poses a threat that the cost of this imported cement will unfairly undercut American counterparts. This legislation is based on similar protections provided for the domestic steel industry. If public dollars are to be spent on cement or concrete, I believe that, like purchases of steel for public construction projects, the purchases should be made from domestic sources. Please join me as a cosponsor of this important legislation. |
