House of Representatives
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

To: All House members
Subject: POW-MIA flag display on state properties
In 1990, the U.S Congress designated the POW/MIA flag as:

“The symbol of our Nation’s concern and commitment to resolving as fully as possible the fates of Americans still prisoner, missing and unaccounted for in Southeast Asia.”

Today, the flag is both a reminder of the 1,602 Americans listed by the Department of Defense as missing and unaccounted-for from the Vietnam War and a symbol of the sacrifices made by service members and their families.

I intend to introduce legislation in the near future that will require the POW/MIA flag to be flown on state grounds and buildings when the American flag is also being flown and when the POW/MIA flag can be reasonably accommodated at the location. The bill will also keep in place current provisions of law that allow the Governor to authorize the display of the POW/MIA flag on local government grounds and buildings.

Please consider cosponsoring this legislation.

Introduced as HB1896
