MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 28, 2017 04:33 PM
From: Representative Stephen Kinsey
To: All House members
Subject: Legislation providing for Parental Notification to Parents of Students Involved in Incidents that occur on School Property

In the near future, I plan to reintroduce legislation from last session (House Bill 1121) that would amend the Public School Code of 1949 to require all school districts to adopt policies and procedures for parental notification to parents of students involved in incidents that occur on school property.

Under this legislation, all school entities would be required to adopt policies and procedures for notifying, in a timely manner, parents, guardians or custodial parents of students involved in incidents which are required to be reported in the school safety report submitted to the department and of students who incur other serious injuries on school property, on the school bus or at a school activity.

Currently, this section requires that all school entities report to the Office of Safe Schools all new incidents involving acts of violence, possession of a weapon or possession, use or sale of a controlled substance as defined in the Act of April 14, 1972, known as The Controlled Substance, Drug, Device and Cosmetic Act, or possession, use or sale of alcohol or tobacco by any person on school property at least once a year, as provided by the office.

I hope you will join me in sponsoring this important legislation.
