Subject: | Allowing Career and Technical Education Students to Serve as Volunteers in Child-Care Facilities |
In the near future, I plan to reintroduce legislation which would require the Department of Human Services to establish rules which would allow career and technical education students to serve as volunteers in child day care centers. This legislation, originally House Bill 2621 of 2012, requires students be supervised by a program instructor or staff member at all times and be five years older than any child receiving care. Additionally, any student serving as a volunteer must be part of an approved program by the Department of Education to either prepare or work in child-care centers or early childhood education. By passing this legislation we can not only provide students at a CTE institution gain experience as they pursue a career in child care or early education, we can provide this experience in a manner that keeps children safe. Please join me and co-sponsor this legislation to provide invaluable experience to CTE students while ensuring child safety.
