Subject: | Recognizing March 19-25, 2017 as “Poison Prevention Week” |
In the near future, I intend on introducing a resolution recognizing the week of March 19-25, 2017 as “Poison Prevention Week” in Pennsylvania. “Poison Prevention Week” exists to inform the public on steps they can take to help prevent accidental poisonings and what to do if a poisoning occurs. In 2015, the nation’s 55 poison centers – including two in Pennsylvania – managed approximately 2.8 million cases, of which 2.2 million were about people coming into contact with dangerous or potentially dangerous substances. The majority of non-fatal poisonings occur in children younger than six years old and poisonings remain one of the leading causes of death among adults. The resolution will include important information on how residents can stop poisonings from happening in their home, the specific actions they can take if such an incident does occur, and will recognize the outstanding work of the Commonwealth’s two poison centers, specifically the Pittsburgh Poison Center, who annually responds to more than 150,000 requests for poison information from the general public and medical professionals who reside in 44 Pennsylvania counties and has become nationally recognized for its work. I hope you will join with me in this effort by co-sponsoring this resolution. PREVIOUS CO-SPONSORS - VEREB, FREEMAN, V.
