Subject: Increasing Penalties for Violators of Stopped School Buses
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation which would increase penalties for motorists who fail to stop for school buses with flashing red lights as well as for school buses being used for the transportation of disabled persons.

Current penalties for motorists who fail to stop for a school bus with flashing red lights include five points to the individual’s driving record, a fine of $250, and 60 days’ suspension. If enacted, this legislation would increase the fine to $500 and the suspension to 90 days. Additionally, violators convicted of subsequent offenses within a four-year license period would be fined $1,000 and receive a six month suspension. Please note, motorists who fail to stop for school buses being used to transport disabled persons would also be subject to these penalties.

It is imperative that we enact stronger penalties to help ensure the safety of our students. Therefore, please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation.
