Subject: | Resolution Recognizing April 2, 2017 as “World Autism Awareness Day” |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing April 2, 2017 as “World Autism Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurological disorder that impairs one’s ability to learn and understand verbal communication and interactive behaviors. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 1 in 68 American children are on the autism spectrum and ASD is about 4.5 times more common among boys than girls. Unfortunately, diagnosing ASD can be difficult since doctors are only able to observe a child’s behavior and development, which can lead to delays in diagnosis and children not getting the help they need. Research has identified several likely causes of ASD, but there is currently no cure. However, early intervention treatment services can help children learn important skills and improve development. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution to bring awareness to ASD and offer our support to those individuals living with ASD and their families. |
