MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 30, 2017 02:07 PM
From: Representative Daniel J. Deasy
To: All House members
Subject: Exempt individual firefighters from paying sales tax on personal purchases of firefighter equipment

I am reintroducing House Bill 1222 of the 2015-2016 legislative session. This legislation would exempt individual firefighters from paying sales tax on personal purchases of firefighter equipment.

Under Section 204 of the Tax Reform Code, fire departments are exempt from paying sales tax on purchases made for the department. Firefighters routinely buy their own helmets, suits, etc., for their jobs, but they are not exempt. I believe it is simply wrong for the state to require the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to protect and serve the residents of Pennsylvania every day to pay sales tax on equipment needed to serve their communities.

I hope that you will join me in co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation. Thank you.
