Subject: | Drug Trafficking Offenses (Prior HB 988) |
I am planning to reintroduce legislation which will amend the Crimes Code provisions by increasing the mandatory sentences for first and subsequent drug trafficking offenses. The trafficking of illegal drugs is a complex threat which imperils our communities in a variety of ways. The presence of illegal drugs in our communities jeopardizes the health, safety, and welfare of all citizens. The infiltration of illegal drugs is not just a problem in our major cities, it transcends every social, ethnic and economic demographic in our society. It provides crime syndicates with profits and fuels a multitude of other crimes such as robbery, murder, money laundering, racketeering, gambling and prostitution. My legislation will increase the mandatory minimum sentences for drug trafficking offenses involving significant amounts of cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin. A copy of the legislation is attached. Previous Cosponsors: BAKER, D. COSTA, MILLARD, MOUL, READSHAW, SAYLOR and PHILLIPS-HILL |
