Subject: | Driver’s License Requirement to Operate Governmental Vehicle (Former HB 405) |
In the near future, I will be reintroducing legislation that will amend Title 65 (Public Officers) of Pennsylvania’s Consolidated Statutes to require public officials and employees who use government vehicles to annually show proof of a valid driver’s license. This legislation is identical to House Bill 405 introduced last session. It is my sincere hope you will join me in this important effort. The Commonwealth and various other political subdivisions spend considerable resources annually on the maintenance of governmental vehicle fleets. Not only are these fleets expensive to maintain, the liability costs to operate them represent a considerable strain on government resources. To be sure, ensuring governmental vehicles are operated in a safe manner is of paramount importance. My legislation will amend Title 65 and require all public officers and employees to provide proof of a valid license to the appropriate governmental unit or employer each year. It is my hope this legislation will help keep suspended drivers and others who could pose a significant harm to residents of this Commonwealth off the streets and ensure only qualified drivers operate governmental vehicles.
