Subject: Hispanic Heritage Month - “Mes de la Herencia Hispana”

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution recognizing September 15 through October 15, 2016, as “Hispanic Heritage Month” in Pennsylvania.

As a Commonwealth, we celebrate the value of our diversity. We are one of 16 states with nearly a half-million Hispanic residents. Hispanic Americans have enriched the cultural diversity of this Commonwealth through business, politics, education, sports, and the arts. Therefore, each year in conjunction with Hispanic Heritage Month, I recognize outstanding Hispanic-Americans from our great Commonwealth. This year, I would like to recognize Diego Castellanos.

Diego Castellanos is one of the best-known Hispanics in the Greater Philadelphia Metropolitan Area, and host of a television show, “Puerto Rican PANORAMA.” He served in the New Jersey National Guard, rising to the rank of Sergeant First Class, and later graduated from the New Jersey Military Academy, becoming an infantry commissioned officer. Later, Mr. Castellanos made strides in education, working for the New Jersey State Department of Education. He was instrumental in drafting the bilingual education mandate and was responsible for school desegregation, including gender equity, affirmative action, equal access for the handicapped, and national origin concerns in the educational process.

As the first Latina in state history to be elected to the General Assembly, I am proud of our Commonwealth's rich multicultural heritage. Please join me in recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month and the achievements of Diego Castellanos.
