Subject: | Prohibition of Lobbying and Campaign Consulting |
I will soon introduce legislation that seeks to eliminate a potential conflict of interest that may arise when an individual or a business entity provides paid lobbying services and paid political consulting services, or when a lobbyist has a financial interest in a paid political consulting business. I understand and appreciate that these services are an important part of the policy-making process and political process. I believe that, in the interest of transparency and accountability, it is important to create this type of firewall. My proposal will amend the Lobbying Disclosure Act provisions of Title 65 to expand the list of activities that are prohibited under this law. Specifically, the legislation will prohibit a lobbyist or business with which a lobbyist is associated from acting as a political consultant. A political consultant is defined as an individual or entity that receives a campaign expenditure, an independent expenditure or any other expenditure that could be construed to influence the electorate for political purposes.
