Subject: Financial Literacy Capstone Course
In the near future, we plan to introduce legislation similar to Senate Bill 101 of 2015 to create a financial literacy capstone course requirement for public schools in Pennsylvania. Our legislation would mandate that school districts incorporate personal finance into an appropriate curriculum, and create a capstone course in order to assess students’ competency regarding the subject. Additionally, it would prompt the State Board to submit a report to the House and Senate Education Committees with data of statewide assessment results for questions relating to financial literacy.

A report released by the Pennsylvania Task Force on Economic Education and Personal Financial Literacy Education found that less than fifty school districts in our state require a course in personal finance for graduation, and those courses vary widely in content. Implementing a uniform personal finance curriculum will ensure that our students emerge into the working world capable of tracking their finances and making responsible, informed decisions with their money.
