Subject: | Resolution Recognizing the 100th Anniversary of the Easter Rising in Ireland |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising in Ireland. The Easter Rising was an armed rebellion against British rule in Ireland that took place during Easter Week of 1916. From April 24 through April 29, 1916, the Irish Citizen Army and volunteer troops captured key buildings and locations in central Dublin, including the General Post Office, the Four Courts, and the South Dublin Union. The rebels then reinforced these buildings for their use as a headquarters and as the seat of their provisional government. By the end of Easter Week, the rebels were ultimately defeated by the British forces, leaving more than 250 civilians dead. However, this historical event is largely viewed as the spark that led to the Irish War of Independence and the creation of the Republic of Ireland in 1922. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution. |
