| I am preparing to introduce legislation that will require each school district to establish and post on its publicly accessible Internet website an e-mail address for each member of the board of school directors. School directors have the significant responsibility of representing their communities in the governance of their local educational systems. To this end, school directors must cast votes for or against educational programs and policies, as well as multi-million dollar budgets and building projects. Local citizens care about these decisions and want to make their own opinions known to their school directors. In an ideal world, members of the public would attend every school board meeting to voice their opinions. However, that is often impractical. Given today’s busy lifestyles and demanding occupations, some of which may require citizens to work odd hours or travel long distances to earn a living, it is critical that we provide members of the public with multiple means of reaching the elected officials who represent them. Under my legislation, each school district will be required to establish an e-mail address for each school director and post such e-mail addresses on the school district’s publicly accessible Internet website for use by members of the public, school district staff and students to communicate with individual school directors regarding matters of school district governance. The e-mail addresses must be published in a location and manner that are easily visible and accessible to the public. By requiring the establishment and posting of such e-mail addresses, my legislation will enhance communication between school directors and their constituents, particularly in communities where individuals may commute long distances to their workplaces and have difficulty attending school board meetings regularly. |
