MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 27, 2015 04:05 PM
From: Representative Stephen Barrar
To: All House members
Subject: Vacant Minority Inspector Positions

In the near future, I will introduce legislation that will permit a vacant minority inspector position to be filled by a qualified registered elector of the county in which the election district is located. Currently, the Election Code of 1937 requires a vacant minority inspector position to be filled by a qualified registered elector of the election district. Additionally, the majority inspector and minority inspector may not be of the same political party.

Vacant minority inspector positions can be difficult to fill in certain election districts due to the fact that some election districts contain a small number of voters who are registered members of the minority party. My legislation will simply expand the pool of available registered electors that may be appointed to these vacancies. Minority inspectors serve a vital role on a local election board by serving as a “check and balance” on the majority party and it is imperative that these vacant positions are filled.

Introduced as HB1179
