Subject: | Requiring All School Vehicles to Stop at Railroad Crossings |
In the near future, I intend to introduce legislation that would amend Title 75 (Vehicles) to require all school vehicles, whether carrying passengers or not, to stop at railroad crossings. Under current law, only school buses are required to stop at all railroad crossings. Other school vehicles, including vans designed to hold 9 or less students, are not subject to this provision. My proposal would ensure the safety of children traveling in school vehicles other than school buses. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), three of our neighboring states, Maryland, New Jersey and Ohio, already require all types of school vehicles to stop at railroad crossings. By mandating that all Pennsylvania school vehicles, including vans, stop at railroad crossings, this bill would enhance student safety in our state.
