Subject: | Increased Penalties for Driving with Suspended License |
At the suggestion of a magisterial district judge, I will be re-introducing HB 1950 from last session, which will increase the penalties for driving while privileges are suspended or revoked. I have learned that recidivism of driving with a suspended or revoked license is quite high, and the current sentencing structure is unsuccessful in deterring offenders from repeating this offense. Under current law, a person who commits the offense of driving with a suspended or revoked license a sixth or subsequent time shall only be sentenced to pay a fine no less than $1000, and to a period of imprisonment of not less than 30 days, but no more than six months. My legislation will increase the sentence when a person is convicted of a tenth or subsequent offense to a fine no less that $2500 and to a period of imprisonment of not less than six months. |
